This  Web Security Trends Report presents new research and statistical breakdowns illustrating the universal nature of malicious code, as well as exposing the presence of malicious code on webpages translated by online translation services. The report includes “in the wild” examples of dynamically obfuscated malicious code, as well as suggestions as to how companies can protect themselves from these threats.

This report presents new findings and statistical breakdowns illustrating the universal and allpervasive nature of malicious code, based on Finjan’s analysis of live end-user traffic in the United Kingdom (UK) including more than 10 million (>10,000,000) unique URLs. The report also includes new findings related to malicious code found on webpages translated by online translation services.

An analysis of the malicious code detected by Finjan indicates that over 80% was obfuscated, making it almost impossible to detect by pattern-matching/signature-based methods. The findings in this report reinforce trends identified in Finjan’s Q4 2006 Web Security Trends Report, which focused on the growing use of dynamic code obfuscation as a technique to bypass traditional security systems. Recently discovered examples of dynamically obfuscated malicious code are also provided herein.
